Papi 2, Critics 0 by Jared Carrabis
Ortiz homers twice, as Sox top Tigers
People who had a ticket to get into the Museum of Science were also admitted into Friday night's game at Comerica Park.
Why, you ask? "Laser show, like Pedey said," claimed David Ortiz after blasting two homers in a winning effort.
On May 14 of last season, Ortiz was hitting .208 with 0 HR and 15 RBI through 34 games. In nine games in the month of May in 2010, Ortiz is hitting .333 with 5 HR and 11 RBI.
Since Dustin Pedroia told Red Sox fans, Ortiz critics and the Boston media to "relax" and enjoy the "laser show," Ortiz has done nothing but back up the words of his bite-size buddy.
When asked to take us through the two at bats in which Ortiz clobbered two mammoth home runs, Papi's explanation was quick and to the point: "Fastball. Gone."
When asked to broaden his response, Ortiz said, "Yeah, I'm feeling good. Swinging the bat, seeing the ball and hit it, my man. There's people that know a lot about the game, they think they have everything figured out. You tell them the season is not over after April. It's over after October."
Pedroia was the opening act to Ortiz's laser show in the top of the first when he hit a rocket of his own over the fence in left field to make 2-0, Red Sox, just two batters into the game. The homer for Pedroia was his eighth of the season. Boston's feisty second baseman didn't hit his eighth home run of the season in 2009 until August 6th.
A walk and a single later, Ortiz murdered a 3-1 fastball that was measured to have traveled approximately 450 feet for a three-run bomb.
With a 5-1 lead in the fourth, Ortiz battled for eight pitches, before destroying a 93 MPH fastball deep into the right field corner.
A Bill Hall pinch hit homer in the ninth gave Boston a comfy 7-2 lead, and that's where it would stay. Clay Buchholz turned in a quality start, logging 6.1 innings, giving up just one run on three hits. The right-hander did walk five, but pitched out of jams, striking out three.
Final score: Red Sox 7, Tigers 2
WP: Clay Buchholz (4-3)
LP: Max Scherzer (1-3)
Game notes: David Ortiz crushed two homers to account for his second multi-home run game of the season and the 36th of his career. In Red Sox history, Ortiz's 34 (had two with the Twins) multi-HR games now only trail Jim Rice's 35, and Ted Williams' 37 multi-long ball games.
Tweet of the Night:
In honor of Ortiz's 2 HR, we're giving you two TOTN, and they come from Dan Barbarisi, who covers the Red Sox for the Providence Journal.
@DanBarbarisi: Ortiz slams huge 450 ft. HR onto right center walkway at Comerica Park. Detroit writers saying its only 2nd time they've seen it hit there.
@DanBarbarisi: With another bomb off Max Scherzer, David Ortiz has now hit home runs totaling 844 feet tonight.
Mike Cameron update:
Cammy went 2-for-4 with a "towering 2-run HR," according to
Dan Hoard, the radio voice of the Paw Sox. Cameron is now 4-for-10 on his current rehab assignment.
